Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change money in Sumba?

There is an ATM at NIHI Sumba for guest convenience, but no currency exchange on the island. If you plan to buy handicrafts in villages, exchange money in Bali before arrival. Credit cards are accepted at checkout for bar, shop, and activity charges; cash advances on cards are not available.

Do you recommend a particular insect repellent?

NIHI provides insect repellent for guests, and mosquito nets are available in every room. A DEET-based spray or roll-on is a good option if you prefer to bring your own. The property is fogged several times per week to keep insects to a minimum.

Is laundry service available?

Complimentary daily laundry service is included for all guests.

What about electricity?

Generators run 24 hours a day. Power is 220V. Room sockets use two round pins; a universal adapter is provided in each villa.

Can I keep in touch with my family and business?

Yes. Reliable satellite Wi‑Fi is available throughout the resort, including in-room. An on-site GSM tower repeats the island cell signal so guests can make and receive calls within the resort area.

What is the tipping policy?

A 10% service charge is added to your bill. Further tipping is optional but always appreciated.

Is there anything to buy at the resort or nearby?

Yes. The Mamole boutique offers jewellery, surf and beachwear, Sumba Foundation products, and basic toiletries. A staff market stocks Sumba ikat textiles brought in from nearby villages. Handicrafts of varying quality are also sold in some villages.

Are the cottages fanned or air conditioned?

All guest accommodation is air-conditioned.

Are babysitters available?

Yes. NIHI can arrange babysitting with several days’ notice. Child supervision is offered for children and toddlers; the team is most comfortable when infants eat solid food and can spend more than a few hours away from a parent. Sumba is remote, and most carers are local Sumbanese staff with limited English—though on-site translation helps nannies follow instructions. Nannies are expected to swim if children want to play in the water. A full-time paramedic is on site around the clock, with swift emergency communication. For parents who want a quiet dinner or to join daytime excursions, friendly professional childcare can be arranged. Guests seeking carers with formal first-aid credentials may prefer to keep very young children in their own company.

I plan on bringing my maid — is there anywhere she can stay?

Accommodation for an accompanying maid may be available at the staff housing facility (Guru Village) or as an extra guest in the same villa when space allows. The charge is US$250.00++.
