Praiyawang Village

Praiyawang is a significant cultural landmark in East Sumba. Only a handful of villages in Sumba have preserved their culture as meticulously as Praiyawang. This village has retained most of its feudal social hierarchy and royal customs, making it one of the last and finest specimens of traditional communities.

The village is known for the megalithic tombs it houses. They are quite distinct from their western counterparts. Praiyawang’s tombs are carved with detailed symbols of animals like horses, buffaloes, and crocodiles, each representing the status and traits of the deceased royals.

Praiyawang also produces some of the most intricate and favored ikat on the island. The distinct designs and symbolism on them make these ikat textiles sought-after.
