Cap Karoso

Founded by French adventurers Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara, who first fell for Sumba in 2017, Cap Karoso opened in 2023 as a resort built with its host community. The project began with a ceremony of ancestral approval attended by 600 members of the local community, and the resort today employs close to 200 Sumbanese team members. It holds one MICHELIN Key and is a member of Design Hotels.

Cap Karoso is a contemporary beachfront resort on the westernmost cape of Southwest Sumba, where the savanna meets the Indian Ocean. Comprising 40 rooms and 20 private villas across six hectares of coastline, anchored by a three-hectare organic farm and shaped by a close partnership with the local Marapu community, Cap Karoso offers a contemporary way into Sumba while remaining deeply connected to the island’s landscape, traditions and people.

Experience

A distinctive aspect of Cap Karoso is its multi-disciplinary artist residency program, which facilitates a dynamic exchange between international artists and local Sumba artisans, inviting contemporary artists and designers to immerse themselves in Sumba’s cultural heritage and spark new cultural dialogues.

Beyond the residency, guests can surf at Pero, snorkel in Karoso Lagoon, take boat trips on the resort’s Jukung, ride Sumbanese sandalwood horses, join ikat weaving workshops, visit traditional Marapu villages, tour the three-hectare organic farm, and trek to nearby waterfalls.

Yoga with Sumbanese teachers and Malala Spa rituals round out the program, and the annual Sumba Food Festival each October brings together eight of Asia-Pacific’s most exciting chefs for two weeks of farm-to-fire cooking. A rotating residency of acclaimed chefs, artists and DJs keeps the property alive year-round.

Service

Dining is deliberately plural. The Beach Club, open all day directly on Karoso Beach, is a family-inspired restaurant of Mediterranean and Indonesian cooking, with daily-caught fish, farm produce, and housemade breads, pastas and pizza doughs. Julang, a dinner-only chef’s table capped at 20 guests per evening, hosts rotating residencies of Michelin-starred and rising talents. Thanks to the top-quality dining experience, Cap Karoso was named Best Gourmet Luxury Tourism Experience in its inaugural year at the Gold List Awards.

Apicine, poolside with sweeping ocean views, offers Eastern Indonesian cuisine with a contemporary twist. Bespoke Farm Table dinners, in-villa feasts and off-script meals in the wild make the offer complete. Malala Spa, named for the Sumbanese word for harmony, works on a farm-to-spa principle using moringa, rosella, vetiver, candlenut and other endemic botanicals grown on-site or ethically sourced from nearby villages. Children are welcome, with a dedicated Karoso Kids club for ages four to twelve.

Design

Architecture by Gary Fell of GFAB Architects draws on the silhouettes of traditional Sumbanese houses, ikat motifs, and hand-worked timber and stone, reimagined through a contemporary design language. Accommodation spans eight categories, from Studios and Terrace Studios with ocean-view balconies to Garden Suites nested in lush vegetation, Beach Suites steps from the sand with alfresco dining and bathing, and 20 private villas.

Villa options include the Duplex Villa “Maghailo,” the two-bedroom “Ndara,” the three-bedroom “Wo’yo” and “Ghan’nu,” and the Beachfront Villa “Julang” with direct beach access through a lush private garden and a custom-equipped beach cabana. All villas come with private pools, from 11 by 4 meters up to L-shaped 18 by 4 meters, alongside cocktail bars, open-air kitchens and rooftop dining spaces.

Getting to Cap Karoso

The nearest airport is Lede Kalumbang (formerly Tambolaka) Airport (TMC), served by daily flights from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar (roughly one hour), with additional weekly connections from Labuan Bajo (Flores). From Jakarta, connections route through Denpasar. The resort’s team can arrange transfers from Lede Kalumbang Airport and can also assist with meet-and-greet in Bali for onward connections. Cap Karoso is a 50-minute drive from the airport.
