Traditional Sumba houses with tall thatched roofs stand in the foreground, backed by the modern town of Waikabubak and green hills under an overcast sky.

The small city of Waikabubak, situated at 400 meters altitude on a plateau, is the capital of western Sumba and is the second largest city in Sumba. It and the surrounding area is known as Wanukaka, and there is a population of about 35,000. This charming little town is a destination that completely breaks from the image we have of Indonesia. The center of Waikabubak is small, don’t expect department stores or nightclubs for evening entertainment. Waikabubak is surrounded by many authentic traditional villages which keep original cultures and customs. This remote region is home to Sumba’s most spectacular attractions – the pasola – and some truly stunning beaches.
