← BackWulla Podu Ritual Month
Wulla Podu is the ‘sacred month’ of the Marapu people, particularly in the Loli and Wanokaka districts of West Sumba. It is a time of strict social taboos, where no music, construction, or marriage ceremonies are permitted. The month is dedicated to purification, ancestral veneration, and wild boar hunting rituals. The 2026 observance culminates in mid-November with traditional dances and offerings in sacred villages like Ratewena. Visitors must respect local customs, which may include restrictions on photography and clothing.
