The Kodi Pasola is a cornerstone of Sumba’s Marapu heritage, featuring a high-octane horseback ritual where hundreds of spears are hurled between clans. The ritual timing is determined by the arrival of the ‘Nyale’ sea worms. The 2026 season is projected to start on February 9 at Homba Kalayo, followed by Bondo Kawango on the 10th and Rara Wanyo on the 11th. The final main event takes place at Wainyapu in March. This visceral display of horsemanship and ancestral devotion is believed to fertilize the land with spilled blood, ensuring a successful harvest cycle.
