Wehola Traditional Village is one of the most sacred villages in West Sumba, renowned for its steadfast adherence to the Marapu belief, which centers on ancestor worship. Nestled on a gentle hill, the village is accessible via a well-marked path from the main street. This cement path, winding gracefully like a snake, is comfortable to walk on and bordered by large rocks and lush trees, creating a green, sheltered environment. The serene pathway allows visitors to feel the tranquility and traditional ambiance even before reaching the village. The village comprises 37 houses, with residents engaged in various occupations such as farming and working at nearby hotels. The homes are built in a traditional style, reflecting the villagers’ way of life. At the heart of Wehola lies the most sacred area, which is strictly off-limits to females. This central space contains ancient tombs and statues left by their ancestors, and any violation of this rule is believed to bring misfortune to the individual and the entire village. Despite their strong adherence to tradition, the villagers are warm and welcoming. They are often willing to accompany visitors through their village, sharing insights into their customs and way of life.
