Bondo Kodi Village

Located an hour’s drive from Tambolaka Airport, Bondo Kodi village is a significant historical landmark in the area. As one of the oldest villages, it existed even before the Sumbanese-Dutch war. From 1911 to 1913, this village was the strategic gathering place for Sumba’s warriors before they confronted the Dutch. The village comprises eight traditional houses and numerous graves surrounding it. Every individual who has lived in Bondo Kodi must be buried there, highlighting its importance as a cultural and ancestral site. At the village’s center lies a sacred area that must not be touched or stepped on by anyone, preserving its cultural sanctity. The residents are exceptionally hospitable and knowledgeable about the village’s history, eagerly sharing its rich narratives with visitors. Unlike other villages in Kodi, Bondo Kodi does not charge an entrance fee, making it accessible to all. This village epitomizes the resilience and historical depth of the Sumbanese people, offering a unique and profound glimpse into their heritage.
