This expansive area, managed both individually and collectively, is a vital economic resource and a cornerstone of livelihood for the local community in Central Sumba. Rice is cultivated twice a year, though the timing is dependent on rainfall patterns. The field employs a blend of traditional and modern agricultural techniques. While traditional water buffalo are no longer used for plowing, tractors have taken their place. However, manual labor remains integral to the planting process. The rice harvested from this field serves dual purposes: it is sold to generate income and is also used for local consumption. This dual function underscores the dependence of the Central Sumba population on agriculture. The rice field plays a crucial role in supporting both the local economy and the agricultural practices that sustain the region.
