The Indonesian government has reached a major milestone in the “Infrastructure Revolution” for the island. The Trans-Sumba Highway, a fully paved arterial road, now connects Waingapu in the east to Tambolaka in the west. This has slashed cross-island travel time from 8 hours to under 4 hours, making remote waterfalls and megalithic sites significantly more accessible for tourists.

The Trans-Sumba Highway poject had begun in 2014 and reached a key milestone in September 2025. Its completion followed the recent completion of Tambolaka Airport expansion, further facilitating connectivity across the island.
