Located at the center of Waikabubak city, just one block away from the main entrance of the old traditional market, Art Shop stands as the oldest of its kind in the city. This hidden gem is unmistakable from the outside, its entrance set slightly back behind a sturdy, giant brown steel gate. Surrounding the entrance are concrete statues of monkeys riding horses, depicting Sumba’s historic festival, Pasola, which immediately sets a mythical and historical tone upon entry. Inside, visitors are enveloped in an atmosphere rich with historical significance. Unlike other art shops that primarily offer ikat and traditional jewelry, Art Shop specializes in unique antique statues crafted from wood, depicting a diverse array of subjects such as animals, mythical creatures, historical figures, and traditional Sumbanese motifs. Each piece not only serves as a striking decorative item but also offers a glimpse into Sumba’s rich cultural heritage. Prices for these artifacts start at 100 thousand rupiah (approximately $7 USD), making them accessible for both collectors and casual visitors. While detailed descriptions for each item may be absent, the welcoming staff is eager to share the stories and cultural significance behind every piece. Additionally, the shop houses remnants of Sumba’s ancient tombs, adding another layer to its historical allure.
