Local authorities are ramping up infrastructure development and community-led programs to transform East Sumba into a premier sustainable tourism destination, following a steady surge in domestic and international visitors. To maximize traveler comfort, the regional government is prioritizing basic infrastructure upgrades to improve accessibility to the island’s iconic, exotic landscapes and boost tourism growth.

According to Marolop Simanjuntak, Head of the East Sumba Tourism and Culture Office, the long-term strategy heavily relies on digital promotion and empowering local communities to manage tourism villages independently. By boosting the local creative economy and raising environmental awareness, officials aim to build a sustainable tourism ecosystem that protects Sumba’s natural heritage while directly driving regional economic growth.
