This 7-day masterclass is a rare deep-dive into the ‘Sacred Red’ (Morinda) and Indigo dyeing traditions of East Sumba. Participants travel to the royal village of Rindi to work alongside Marapu elders and master weavers. The program covers the entire ‘Lau Pahudu’ and ‘Hinggi’ process, from the spiritual significance of motifs like the ‘Andung’ (Skull Tree) to the technical complexity of fermenting indigo vats. Beyond weaving, the tour explores the connection between textiles and Sumba’s megalithic funeral rites. Guests stay in Waingapu and travel to remote coastal plantations to witness sustainable Morinda root harvesting.
